The San Mateo County Department of Agriculture/Weights & Measures is a regulatory and informational agency serving agriculture, industry and the community. The County Agricultural Commissioner/Sealer of Weights and Measures is the local enforcement authority for California Department of Food and Agriculture and California Department of Pesticide Regulation.
Fred was appointed as the San Mateo County Agricultural Commissioner and Sealer of Weights and Measures in March of 2010. He came to San Mateo County after serving as the Assistant Commissioner and Assistant Sealer of Weights and Measures for both Napa and San Francisco Counties, and as the Deputy Commissioner/Sealer for Marin County.
After earning a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Plant Pathology from UC Berkeley, Fred began working as a field biologist in the entomology and plant pathology programs for Cal’s College of Natural Resources and USDA’s Pacific Southwest Forest and Range Experiment Station. Fred started working in the county agricultural system in 1985 as an Agricultural Biologist for Santa Barbara County. While Deputy Commissioner in Marin County, Fred oversaw the county’s Integrated Pest Management Program and in 2008 was honored by Marin County’s IPM Commission as “IPM Cooperator of the Year”. Fred was integral in redrafting the Marin County IPM Ordinance and implementing changes to the program, which shortly thereafter was awarded the prestigious “IPM Innovators Award” by California’s Department of Pesticide Regulation.
With over thirty years in pest management, and 28 years of regulatory experience in agriculture and weights and measures programs, Fred is committed to building strong relationships with growers and partners to ensure San Mateo County continues to be a viable, productive, and healthy agricultural community. The department staff of 37 led by Fred are focused on protecting agriculture, the environment, and the community through education and implementation of agricultural and weights and measures regulatory programs.
